City High Light: Manteca

Manteca's slogan is "The Family City," and it has a rich
history in California’s central valley.

It is located approximately 80 miles
east of San Francisco and was
founded in 1861 by Joshua Cowell.
It started when Cowell claimed
1,000 acres and built homes on
what is now the corner of Main
and Yosemite. The Central Pacific Railroad shortly there
after laid down track nearby this establishment in 1873.
The residents wanted to refer to their new train station as
"Cowell Station" named after the founder, however the
name was already in use near the town of Tracy.  The
residents agreed to change the name choosing
"Monteca."  This new name was misprinted by the
railroad as "Manteca" (Spanish for lard) and was
eventually accepted as its new name. Hence in 1918,
Manteca was incorporated as a city.

Even though the name was a misprint, Manteca is a
wonderful place to live. With newer commercial and retail
developments, its Field of Dreams base ball park and a
recent investment in improving its old town district, the
city has really made this town a great place to live.  It’s
also the kind of town that’s proud of our stars and strips.
During patriotic events, the entire city is adorned with old
glory every few feet along its main streets.  It’s an
amazing site to see and a tribute to the patriotic folks that
reside there.

It’s population was estimated at approximately 65,000 in
2008 and is estimated to reach 75,000 in 2013. Manteca
lies conveniently between highways 5, 99 and 120 and
also has a Bay Area connection via the Altamont
Commuter Express or Ace Train, which connects to the
Bay Area. The station is located on the west side of town
on Yosemite.

This well located and very accessible city, makes a
perfect home for those on the go and who enjoy a true
since of community.
